Jackie first reached out to me on Valentine's Day last year. Her initial inquiry piqued my interest because she mentioned that she and her fiancé Josh were planning a small wedding in the Historic Third Ward. First, they'd be getting ready at the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel, then they'd be moving over to Onesto for their ceremony and reception.
We hit it off on our initial phone consultation and decided that we would be great collaborators in bring their wedding photo ideas to life!
We developed our friendship during an engagement session that also took place in the Third Ward and at Lakeshore State Park. Walking around the downtown area made for some impressive photos of the Milwaukee skyline and gorgeous Lake Michigan waters. Josh and Jackie love living in Milwaukee and wanted to incorporate some of the iconic backdrops to help tell their unique story.
The happy couple met back in college when Jackie was finishing up her senior year of college at UWM and Josh had just wrapped up his Master's program. Both individuals are caring and supportive of one another and their chosen career paths further highlight that. Josh works in the environmental science realm conducting research on bodies of freshwater, hence his love for Lake Michigan. Jackie studied to become a CT Tech. Their love for people and our planet were obvious to me as soon as we had the chance to dive into some deeper conversations.
Jackie mentioned that when they first met, she was impressed with his intellect. He was a bit shy at first but after opening up they learned how much they have in common and the rest was history. For Josh, he was smitten immediately by Jackie's beauty but afterwards learned that not only is she beautiful, she's also kind, caring and supportive. All very important elements to create a lasting relationship.
The couple enjoys spoiling their pup, Wes, and traveling. When they're at home, they can often be found working on home projects together.
The Proposal: Josh proposed on a vacation in Colorado. Jackie and Josh spent half a week in Denver where they saw the Brewers play the Rockies, and then went up to Estes Park to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. They took a short detour to Boulder, Colorado and visited a popular hike at Mt. Evans. Jackie had been expecting a proposal during the week at the Rockies but Josh surprised her by proposing later on in their trip at Mt. Evans.
Wedding Planning: Jackie and Josh decided to host a small wedding. They knew from the beginning that they did not want to host a large wedding, instead they wanted to keep it intimate and meaningful with those closest to them participating. Because of their love for Milwaukee and Italian food, it was an obvious choice to choose the Third Ward. The Kimpton Journeyman Hotel makes for an excellent backdrop for portraits and is conveniently located just down the way from Onesto.
Jackie went for a simple elegance aesthetic, drawing inspiration from years gone by with a vintage wedding veil.
Their September wedding ended up being a perfect day. The weather was warm and the sky was clear, leading to some bright sunshine for their golden hour wedding portraits. It was a joy to prance around the Third Ward taking photos against the iconic cream city brick. There truly is inspiration down every alleyway.
The wedding ceremony at Onesto was short & sweet and the Italian food was absolutely scrumptious...all of the most important people were with Jackie and Josh as they celebrated into the night.
Congratulations again to Jackie & Josh and thank you for choosing Whimsical Roots Photography to capture your Milwaukee wedding!
